Lab Results Integration Case Study
Twin Tier Home Health, a division of United Health Services, previously used a manual and time-consuming process to review, input and track lab results. As lab results were faxed in, the paper printouts were placed in the clinicians' mail boxes. Clinicians were required to visit the office to review labs, take action on abnormal results and then enter the lab results into NDoc. In addition to increasing clinician office time and mileage, the system didn't facilitate the prompt response that Twin Tier desired for patients.
Building a Solution
Twin Tier began to work collaboratively with its software provider, Thornberry Ltd. Known for its willingness to listen and work with its customers, Thornberry embraced the idea of automated lab results for its NDoc product. The concept appeared to be particularly timely as Thornberry was rapidly working to finalize a true electronic medical record for home care and hospice. The integration of automated lab results would take the product one step closer to offering a complete, paperless medical record. The new functionality would meet Twin Tier's goals of rapid response to patients needs and increased productivity.
The Results
As lab results are electronically received by Twin Tier, the patient record is automatically updated in NDoc. If abnormal results are reported, the system automatically creates an email alert for the case manager. Case managers can review the results from their laptop and take appropriate action as needed.
The Benefits
Patients with abnormal results receive benefit of prompt action on their behalf as the clinician can contact the physician from the field. Clinicians also have additional time in the field since they are not required to return to the office just review lab results.
The agency enjoys an increase in clinician productivity as lab results no longer need to be entered in manually. The reduction in mileage expenses also creates additional savings.
In fact, the cumulative impact of multiple technology improvements, clinicians are so seldom in the office now that the organization removed their desks! Staff morale has improved as clinicians are able to set their own schedules and work from home.
